RETHINK REPAIR.

Extend Critical Electronics Life In-house

Why Repair Matters Now?

For organisations that depend on critical electronics, replacement is becoming slower, more expensive and less sustainable. Long lead times, component shortages and OEM obsolescence can leave essential assets unavailable when they are needed most.

With the right diagnostic tools, training and repair strategy, engineering teams can recover failed circuit boards, retain technical knowledge and extend asset life. Since 1983, ABI Electronics has helped organisations build this capability in-house, reducing external dependency, protecting availability and creating lasting value.

Our Story

ABI Electronics has designed and manufactured cutting-edge circuit board fault diagnostic and reverse engineering solutions in the UK since 1983. We have over 40 years' experience in developing the highest quality testing and fault-finding equipment. Backed by a global reputation for quality and service, we are certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2015. Over the years, we have remained loyal to our core principle of designing and manufacturing quality products in-house, in the UK.

Our company's founder, Ian Fletcher, developed the world's first low-cost integrated circuit testing solution, adopted by engineers worldwide. This was a breakthrough for the maintenance industry, kickstarting our product line and establishing our reputation as a leading provider of test and measurement equipment. In 2015, we built on this success with the launch of Repair, Don't Waste, a global movement promoting the benefits of repair over replacement across multiple sectors. Repair Don't Waste members collectively save hundreds of millions of Pounds yearly, reducing e-waste and downtime while creating new job opportunities globally.

Today, ABI's BoardMaster, RevEng and JTAGMaster support the maintenance of mission-critical systems across defence, aerospace, rail, energy, automotive, industrial and biomedical sectors, trusted by organisations including Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, NASA, Samsung and the UK Ministry of Defence. Our solutions are renowned for their adaptability and the measurable value they deliver through reduced costs and downtime.

FAQs

ABI Electronics designs and manufactures component-level fault diagnostic and repair equipment in the UK. Our systems, including BoardMaster, RevEng, SENTRY and JTAGMaster, are used to test, diagnose and repair complex electronic assemblies down to individual component level, eliminating No Fault Found (NFF) and extending the operational life of critical equipment.

Our equipment is used across defence, aerospace, rail, energy, automotive, industrial and biomedical sectors. Customers include Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, Leonardo, Collins Aerospace, the UK Ministry of Defence (DE&S and DECA), Alstom and the US Army National Guard, among others.

Component-level repair identifies and replaces the specific failed part on a printed circuit board, rather than replacing the entire board or unit. This approach reduces cost per repair, shortens turnaround time, and keeps legacy and obsolete systems operational when replacement boards are no longer available. For organisations managing ageing fleets or platforms with long service lives, it is a core capability for sustaining readiness rather than a cost-cutting measure alone.

Yes. RevEng, our reverse engineering solution, enables in-house recreation of documentation and test procedures for PCBs that are no longer supported by the original manufacturer. This is critical for organisations maintaining legacy platforms where OEM support has ended but the equipment must remain in service. RevEng and BoardMaster are often used in conjunction to deliver the best fault coverage and obsolescence management solution.

For BoardMaster, RevEng, SENTRY and other systems, pricing depends on configuration and application, so please contact us for a quotation. Pricing for ChipMaster Compact Professional (P/N 410001) and LinearMaster Compact Professional (P/N 510001) is available directly.

Repair, Don’t Waste is a global movement founded by ABI Electronics in 2015 to promote repair over replacement as a strategic and environmental priority. Repair, Don’t Waste (RDW ) now has over 300 member organisations, which collectively save more than £100 million per year while reducing e-waste and equipment downtime. ABI RevEng is a PCB reverse engineering and schematic generation system. It uses guided continuity testing, clips, connectors and probes to learn the connectivity of an unpowered physical circuit board. RevEng then produces a netlist that can be transferred into CAD software to create professional circuit diagrams. It is used when schematics are missing, inaccurate or no longer available from the original equipment manufacturer, particularly for obsolete or unsupported electronics. RevEng recovers the board’s design information, while BoardMaster diagnoses faults. Together, they support documentation recovery, component-level troubleshooting and long-term asset maintenance.

ABI Electronics primarily helps organisations establish their own in-house PCB diagnostic and repair capability. ABI is not a general outsourced circuit board repair service. It provides diagnostic and reverse engineering equipment, software, technical training and implementation support so customers can troubleshoot and maintain their own electronics. This approach allows organisations to retain technical knowledge, reduce dependence on OEMs and external repair providers, develop repeatable procedures and respond more quickly when critical equipment fails. The customer’s engineering team owns and develops the long-term repair capability.

ABI products are used in industries that depend on critical, high-value or long-life electronic systems. These include defence, aerospace and aviation MRO, rail and metro transport, automotive manufacturing, semiconductor production, energy and renewable power, medical equipment, telecommunications and industrial automation. ABI systems are particularly relevant where equipment downtime is costly, replacement lead times are long, technical documentation is missing or OEM support has ended. They can support maintenance, fault diagnosis, reverse engineering, production testing and electronics obsolescence management.

ABI BoardMaster is an integrated PCB diagnostic system designed to identify faults at the board and component level. Conventional instruments such as oscilloscopes and digital multimeters usually provide individual measurements that require further interpretation. BoardMaster combines powered and unpowered testing, digital and analogue functional testing, 2D and 3D V-I analysis, live comparison, IC identification and multiple programmable instruments in one platform. Its TestFlow software also enables teams to create guided, repeatable diagnostic procedures. Conventional instruments remain useful, but BoardMaster helps technicians progress from taking measurements to locating the faulty circuit or component.

ABI Electronics provides tailored technical training for its complete product range, from basic equipment operation to advanced diagnostic applications. Training can be delivered at ABI’s UK facility or at the customer’s site and is adapted to the equipment, users and operational objectives involved. Courses can cover test methods, component-level fault diagnosis, TestFlow procedure creation, RevEng operation and the development of structured repair processes. Dedicated training boards and guides are also available. Customers receive free ongoing technical support, free software updates and access to ABI’s international distributor and support network.

Published ABI customer projects demonstrate measurable improvements in repair time, cost, asset availability and technical independence. The UK Ministry of Defence and Defence Electronic Components Agency reported cost reductions of 94% to 99% against traditional replacement strategies across multiple programmes, with savings running into tens of millions of pounds. Collins Aerospace reduced the test time for an aircraft engine control module (FADEC) diagnostic process by more than 50% using BoardMaster and TestFlow. ReNew Biomedical recovered more than US$100,000 in equipment value and reported recovering its BoardMaster investment in less than six months. Results vary by application, implementation and workload.
